I love Barnett Newman and how he continued a specific style of painting. Wow to think that I was one when he painted the Onement I (1948). The painting’s title is an archaic derivation of the word “atonement,” meaning, “the state of being made into one.”
Newman used a vertical band to define the spatial structure of his work. This band, later dubbed a “zip,” became Newman’s signature mark.
Newman’s paintings were wonderful fields of color and were a break with the gestural abstraction of his peers. He Created ZIP- an approach that avoided painting’s conventional oppositions of figure and ground. He created an area or line of color he called a symbol, the “zip,” which might reach out and pull the viewer into the image.
Barnett Newman was an American artist. He is seen as one of the major figures in abstract expressionism and one of the foremost of the color field painters
I never knew before that he looked like a detective. I love his mustache.
I seem to stray all over the place. Like a lost dog sniffing my away along.
Nice article about Barnett Newman. The Art Story
“I hope that my painting has the impact of giving someone, as it did me, the feeling of his own totality, of his own separateness, of his own individuality.”
Newman shared the Abstract Expressionists‘ interests in myth and the primitive unconscious, but the huge fields of color and trademark “zips” in his pictures set him apart from the gestural abstraction of many of his peers. The response to his mature work, even from friends, was muted when he first exhibited it. It was not until later in his career that he began to receive acclaim, and he would subsequently become a touchstone for both Minimalists and a second generation of Color Field painters. Commenting on one of Newman’s exhibitions in 1959, criticThomas B. Hess wrote, “he changed in about a year’s time from an outcast or a crank into the father figure of two generations.”
FRANCIS BACON QUOTES
“I’m greedy for life; and I’m greedy as an artist. I’m greedy for what I hope chance can give me far beyond anything I can calculate logically. And it’s partly my greed that has made me what’s called live by chance – greed for food, for drink, for being with the people one likes, for the excitement of things happening. So the same thing applies to one’s work.”
“I’m working for myself; what else have I got to work for? How can you work for an audience? What do you imagine an audience would want? I have got nobody to excite except myself, so I am always surprised if anyone likes my work sometimes. I suppose I’m very lucky, of course, to be able to earn my living by something that really absorbs me to try to do, if that is what you call luck.”
“what once looked entirely of the moment has turned out to be timeless, and what once rang out like an individual cry of pain has been taken up, all over the world, as the first oboe’s ‘A natural’ is taken up by the whole orchestra.”
– John Russell speaking about Bacon’s work

When I was in London and first saw Francis bacon at the Tate I thought it was grotesque and it frightened me? now, however As I have become more aware I am learning to appreciate the genius behind the work.
How odd that seeing more, made me appreciate more.
“The craving for color is a natural necessity just as for water and fire. Color is a raw material indispensable to life. At every era of his existence and his history, the human being has associated color with his joys, his actions and his pleasures.”– Fernand Leger (20th century French artist)
Joseph Fernand Henri Léger (French: [leʒe]; February 4, 1881 – August 17, 1955) was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. In his early works he created a personal form of cubism which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of pop art.
Qi Baishi (齊白石, 1864-1957) was one of the most well-known contemporary Chinese painters. His original name is Qi Huang (齊璜) and style name Weiqing (渭清). Baishi (“white stone”) is one of his pseudonyms. Some of Qi\’s major influences include the Ming Dynasty artist Xu Wei (徐渭) and the early Qing Dynasty painter Zhu Da (朱耷, 即”八大山人”). The subjects of his paintings include almost everything, commonly animals, scenery, figures, vegetables, and so on. In his later years, many of his works depict mice, shrimps, or birds. Qi Baishi is particularly known for painting shrimps.
When you start working, everybody is in your studio, the past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your own ideas. But as you continue they start leaving one by one and you’re left completely alone. And if you’re lucky, even you leave.”

John Milton Cage Jr. (September 5, 1912 – August 12, 1992) was an American composer, music theorist, writer, and artist. A pioneer of indeterminacy in music, electroacoustic music, and non-standard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde. Critics have lauded him as one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. He was also instrumental in the development of modern dance, mostly through his association with choreographer Merce Cunningham, who was also Cage\’s romantic partner for most of their lives.
Stress Management for Everyone! This is absolutely wonderful!!!!
I normally do not post things like this but my sister sent it and it actually really help today so I’m passing it on to you all it’s worth reading.
A young lady confidently walked around the room while leading and explaining stress management to an audience with a raised glass of water. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, ‘half empty or half full?’… She fooled them all …. “How heavy is this glass of water?” she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. To 20 oz.
She replied , “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” She continued, “and that’s the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.”
“As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden – holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night… Pick them up tomorrow.
